Twitter has been around for over 10 years, and some businesses still aren’t utilising this amazing social media tool for their business. There is no need to be afraid of Twitter, it’s great fun and a fantastic way to make local and global contacts!
Here’s our top 5 tips on how to jump on the Twitter bandwagon…
1: Present your brand
How you present your brand on your Twitter profile is the first step to being successful. It’s a chance to tell Twitter what you’re all about. Choose an account name and profile imagery consistent with other online profiles and your brand.
2: When it comes to following people, choose quality not quantity!
When I first started using Twitter, I followed everyone and anyone I saw. This was anyone from reality TV stars to Japanese shoe companies, and at the time it seemed like a good idea to follow as many people as possible so they would follow me back. Turns out this doesn’t work very well! Down the line your timeline will be full of spambots and information that’s totally irrelevant. It’s ok to follow lots of people, just make sure they share great content that’s interesting and relevant to you.
3: Tweet your heart out!
Twitter is fast compared to other social media sites. Take time to get your bearings, listen to what other people are talking about and jump in when you are ready. Decide what you want to talk about on Twitter. What’s your company message? What is your social media tone? Do you want to share information and news? Or is it more about brand awareness? These are all important things to think about before you start tweeting.
4: Work the hashtags
Hashtags appear in tweets to identify a common topic or theme, and these conversations appear in streams. For example, #BelfastHour is a locally run hashtag ‘chat’ which happens weekly, and local businesses and people are encouraged to network with one another, through the #BelfastHour hashtag. It’s a great way to see what people are saying about topics related to your business, for example #NIFood, #MediaNI.
5: Video and imagery is a powerful Twitter tool
We all know how successful images and especially video is on social media, and Twitter is no exception. Video has a proven rate of 200-300% more engagement on social media than still images. If you are tweeting about your business, add a relevant image or video and your tweets are way more likely to get engagement!
